About Nourish:

Nourish Pierce County is an ecumenical organization that provides food and emergency service referrals to people in need since 1973.  Our mission is to provide food for people in need with compassion, dignity, and respect.  With six food bank locations and two mobile food banks serving fifteen additional sites, Nourish serves more than 40,000 individuals totaling more than 315,000 visits each year.  With the assistance of hundreds of volunteers, our goal is to provide each person or family with enough food to make three nutritious meals a day for three days. All Nourish Food Banks operate on a self-serve model, allowing clients to select the foods that best meet their family’s needs.  Clients are asked to limit their visits to once a week, but no one in need is turned away.

Position Title: Grocery Rescue Driver

 

Reports to: Warehouse Manager

 

Status: Full Time – Hourly, Non-Exempt

 

Salary Range:  $19.00-$21.00 per hour plus medical, dental and retirement benefits.

 

Purpose: One of the ways that Nourish receives food for our food banks is through recovering food from grocery and retail outlets as well as local businesses and hunger relief agencies. This position is responsible for the coordination and pick-up of food from local partners and delivering it to Nourish’s food banks and warehouse. This position ensures a warm and welcoming environment through their interactions with clients, volunteers, staff, and community partners. This position demonstrates effective leadership and good public relations skills.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Product Pick up and Delivery

  • With supervision from the Warehouse Manager, establish and professionalize relationships with donating partners & retail outlets to improve the consistency, reliability, and safety of Nourish’s food donation & recovery efforts.
  • Sort, separate, weigh, and record recovered food to enable regular reporting and tracking on the nature of food waste contributed by grocery recovery partners
  • Load and unload food.
  • Ability to work with volunteers in completing assignments related to the food rescue program to include sorting, separating, weighing, and recording rescued food.
  • Check all incoming food for as it relates to food safety issues (expiration dates and/or spoilage), disposes of any inedible food.
  • Monitor and report vehicle maintenance needs.
  • Keep vehicle(s) clean.

 

Professional Development

  • Participate in appropriate workshops, conferences, and community meetings related to food banks and administration, and maintain current required certifications.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.
  • Assist with the development or implementation of efforts to reduce food waste throughout Pierce County.

 

Other Duties

  • Treats all staff, volunteers, clients and the public with respect and compassion.
  • Assists Nourish staff, volunteers, clients and partners with other duties as assigned.

 

Competencies:

  • Must be able to drive box trucks up to 26,000 GVW
  • Must be able to perform basic math skills
  • Must be able to read and write in English
  • Must have a valid Washington State Driver’s license
  • Must have a clean Motor Vehicle Record
  • Must have previous experience in loading and unloading
  • Ability to interact effectively with the community
  • Demonstrated computer and mobile phone literacy required, including text messaging; ability to make and receive telephone calls; ability to use the Internet to search and obtain information; sending and receiving email via browser or MS Outlook; composing reports and other documents using MS Word; entry and management of data in MS Excel; data entry and report generation in client database.
  • Must be able to provide accurate and timely written or verbal information when requested by phone, over email, or as part of regular reporting requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad and diverse audience
  • Must be able to provide accurate information

 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for four or five hours at a time.
  • Must be able to communicate detailed information clearly in person, in writing, by phone, and by email.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required.
  • Required to follow all Nourish health policies, including masking.

 

Required Education, Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of two years truck driving experience.
  • Completion of high school or GED.
  • Current food handler’s permit.

 

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience

  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) license is preferred.
  • AA or higher preferred.
  • A background check will be required.
