Nourish Pierce County is a nonprofit organization providing food and emergency service referrals to people in need since 1973. Our mission is to provide nutritious food and support services to people in need with compassion, dignity, and respect. With six food bank locations and an award-winning mobile food bank that serves fifteen additional sites, Nourish serves over 57,000 individuals totaling more than 370,000 visits each year.  With the assistance of over 700 volunteers, our goal is to provide each person or family with enough food to make three nutritious meals a day for three days. All Nourish food banks operate on a self-serve model, allowing clients to select the foods that best meet their family’s needs. Position Title: Food Bank Manager
Reports to: Director of Operations
Status: Full Time – Non-Exempt

Salary: $40,000 - $46,000 plus a generous benefit package (medical, dental, EAP, 401k matching (3%), paid vacation and sick leave).

Job description 

This full time permanent position is a floating/rotating Food Bank Manager position.  This position will travel between to and between sites throughout Pierce County one or more times per day.  Mileage is reimbursable.  This position requires the successful candidate to have and use reliable personal transportation.  This position is responsible for all phases of food bank operations involved in the acquisition, maintenance, and distribution of food to customers. Ensures a compassionate and warm-welcoming environment for customers and provides a positive working environment for volunteers. Demonstrates effective leadership and good public relations skills and the ability to use personal computer technology. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Food Bank: 

  • Maintain a respectful, friendly, and cooperative environment where all are treated with compassion, dignity, and respect. 

  • Manage relationships with assigned local food outlets, groceries, and other food distributors, for the purpose of securing donated food items. Pick up food as needed or when available. 

  • Create a clean and safe environment by following food and operations safety regulations. 

  • Create and maintain temperature logs for freezers and refrigerators. Record & post temperatures. 

  • Follow maintenance schedule for major equipment including walkie/stackers. 

  • Create, post and update as needed facility safety measures. 

  • Order food supplies to ensure adequate inventory of nutritious food to distribute. Schedule regular food deliveries to the food bank. 

  • Ensure grocery rescue and other local pick-ups are complete and in compliance with contract or donation guidelines. 
  • Perform evaluations throughout the year to ensure customer satisfaction and program efficiency.
  • Report all policy, procedure, and safety violations to the Director of Operations (or their designee) immediately.
  • Partner with the Director of Operations, in matters of staff and volunteer evaluation, discipline, or dismissal as requested. 

Record Keeping 

  • Provide monthly food bank reports by the 5th day of each month for the previous month to the Central Office. These include reports for Emergency Food Network and Northwest Harvest. 

  • Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of client database. 

  • Weigh all donated food and record accurate weight on food donation receipts. 

Facility Management 

  • Ensure safety, maintenance and cleanliness of site including all food bank equipment and appliances. 

  • Before shift starts, assure facility is open, shift support is in place, and appropriate supplies are available for expected shift needs. 

  • Maintain and ensure that the food bank, vehicles, exterior areas, parking lots and restrooms meet or exceed sanitary and safety guidelines/regulations.  Close and secure facility at end of shift.

Volunteer and Staff Management and Development 

  • Train volunteers on proper and safe use of equipment and maintain certifications as required. 

  • Train volunteers to assist in food bank operations. 

  • Train volunteers on proper food handling techniques; perform safety checks every week to ensure proper techniques are being followed. 

  • Train volunteers on proper and safe use of equipment and maintain certifications as required. 

  • Manage and supervise onsite volunteers and staff. 

  • Implement and enforce all personnel policies including termination (the latter only with the Director of Operations, or their designee’s prior approval). 

  • Supervise, coach, counsel volunteers and staff as needed. 

  • Work with the Nourish Community Outreach Manager to recruit, schedule and train volunteers to assist in food bank operations and create an effective system for recognizing volunteers at least annually.
  • Assure that all volunteers are qualified, signed up for shifts, and checked into shift on Galaxy Digital volunteer database system. 
  • Provide regular volunteer staff meetings, events &/or recognition. 

Customer Service 

  • Handle customer service issues with diplomacy. When issues occur, provide a response to the customer within 3 days of complaint.

  • Talk with customers on a weekly basis to gather feedback. 

  • Provide referrals to other resources to customers as needed. 

  • Survey customers twice a year to measure effectiveness. 

Financial Management 

  • Manage the food bank as budgeted. 

  • Provide the Accounting Department receipts and reimbursement requests (if any) weekly. 

Professional Development 

  • Participate in appropriate workshops, conferences, and community meetings related to food banks and administration, and maintain current required certifications. 

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.

  • Previous supervision experienced required. 

  • Minimum AA Degree required.

  • Knowledge of food bank operations and inventory control preferred. 

  • Volunteer experience preferred. 

  • Current Food Handlers Certification required but can be completed upon hiring. 

  • Current Washington state driver’s license with copy of driving abstract as proof of insurability required. 

  • Ability to interact effectively with the community. 

  • Demonstrated computer and written literacy required. 

  • Ability to compose written (by hand and computer) communication and speak orally using the English language with generally accepted spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a broad and diverse audience. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Must be able to lift up to a min of 40 lbs. on a repeated basis. 

  • Must be able to work independently. 

  • Must be able to sit or stand for four or five hours. 

  • Must be able to communicate clearly using a phone. 

  • Must be able to provide accurate information. 

Salary Range: $40,000 - $46,000 plus a generous benefit package
