About Nourish Pierce County:

Incorporated in 1982, Nourish Pierce County’s (formerly FISH Food Banks of Pierce County) mission is to provide nutritious food and support service to people in need with compassion, dignity, and respect.

Nourish serves more than 30,000 individuals each month at 21 different locations, including six brick and mortar food banks, and fifteen locations served by our award-winning Mobile Food Banks. With the assistance of more than five hundred volunteers, our goal is to provide each person or family with enough food to make three nutritious meals a day for three days. All Nourish Food Banks operate on a self-serve model, allowing clients to select the foods that best meet their family’s needs. Clients are asked to limit their visits to once a week, but no one in need is turned away.

Nourish Pierce County is 100% donor funded. Funding comes from diverse sources including individuals, faith-based organizations, corporations, foundations and government, and in-kind sources.

Position Title:    Director of Development

Salary:               $85,000 - $120,000 per year DOE

Purpose and General Description of Responsibilities

The Director of Development provides leadership and is accountable for the design and execution of an annual development plan which includes a revenue goal of approximately $3 million annually. They accomplish this with a three-person Development team that includes a Development Manager, Grants Coordinator, and Development Administrative Assistant.

The successful Director of Development will be a positive, friendly, seasoned fund development professional with experience leading, managing, motivating, and coaching development staff, volunteers, and Board members to success. They will be experienced at planning and executing all aspects of a fund development program with a sense of urgency and good follow-through. They will both be a creative problem-solver who values analytics, but gets things done to achieve or exceed revenue goals and program metrics within defined timeframes. The successful candidate will be experienced in major donor fundraising and someone who embraces and seeks out face-to-face stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation. They will also have experience successfully leading and supporting fundraising events, grants, and annual giving campaigns; finally, the successful candidate will actively network, prospect, and bring people to the table who have a passion for serving people in their time of need.

In addition to leadership, supervision and departmental oversight, the Director of Development maintains a portfolio of major gift and planned gift donors and prospects with whom they will meet face to face on a regular basis. They also engage senior staff, Board members and key volunteers to participate in prospecting, donor cultivation and stewardship meetings.

The Development Department is responsible for the creation of development and communication plans, strategies, and activities to acquire, retain and upgrade donors and their contributions and communicate with stakeholders. The Director of Development ensures that weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual key performance metrics assigned to the Development Department are achieved and documented in the donor database and reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Primary Duties

Planning, Policies, Procedures and Budget

  • Monitor trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies, as necessary.
  • Create and implement, in coordination with senior leadership, the Board of Directors, and the Development team a written, strategic, and well-positioned development plan to raise funds, provide excellent donor stewardship and meet or exceed revenue goals to support the strategic direction of the organization.
  • Draft and recommend policies and procedures for Nourish development activities which reflect ethical fundraising and current best practices.
  • Collaborate with and support the CEO and Board of Directors to plan for and achieve capital project financial goals.
  • Develop and gain approval for an annual income and expenditure budget for the fund development program; Develops, monitors, and administers department budget, work plans and reports.
  • Monitor expenses and analyze budget reports on fund development and recommend changes, as necessary.

Supervision and Program Oversight

  • Hire, supervise and coach team members.
  • Conduct quarterly performance reviews and annual performance evaluations with team members.
  • Ensure that assigned fundraising and communication activities are conducted successfully according to plans and timelines.
  • Ensure that the scheduling of employee paid time off is consistent with Departmental needs to ensure that all deadlines and quality expectations are met.
  • Ensure that moves management strategies are developed and implemented, using the donor database (currently Bloomerang) “tasks” and “interactions” features as a data source to document key performance metrics.

Face-to Face Prospect and Donor Meetings

  • Lead Nourish Pierce County’s effort to identify and cultivate major gifts prospects and donors.
  • Create and manage a portfolio of between 50 and 75 major gift prospects and donors ($10,000 or higher), conducting a minimum of eight regular face-to-face cultivation, stewardship, or solicitation meetings monthly to ensure continuing and growing financial support.
  • Collaborate with the CEO, Board members and other senior leadership to meet with funders and prospects for the purpose of stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation.
  • Assign donor and prospect portfolios to Development Department staff members; provide training, coaching, and support so that they participate in stewardship, cultivation, and solicitation activities.
  • Plan and implement strategies and activities to engage senior staff, Board members and key volunteers in prospecting, donor cultivation and stewardship meetings.

Grants and Sponsorships

  • Coach and support the Grants Coordinator, ensuring that letters of inquiry, applications, and reports are created, reviewed, and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with the Grants Coordinator to develop and engage the business and faith communities to increase the number of businesses and faith-based organizations who are engaged and supporting Nourish Pierce County.
  • Work with the CEO, Deputy Director, and food bank managers to determine and pursue specific sponsorship/underwriting, and grants for programs.

Special Events

· Serve in the lead role to ensure that fundraising, cultivation, and stewardship special events are organized, successful and that attendance and financial goals are met.
· Ensure that fundraising events are produced with a high level of quality and attention to detail, all aspects of events are communicated effectively across internal and external audiences and achieving or exceeding revenue goals.
· Collaborate with the Development Manager and Volunteer Coordinator to engage Board members and community volunteers to create and build volunteer committee structure to help special events be successful and meet their financial goals.

Data Integrity, Correspondence, Confidentiality and Reporting

· Support the Development Manager to ensure that the donor database is up to date, that information is entered accurately and consistently, and that acknowledgments, and other donor correspondence is issued in a timely manner.
· Ensure that key performance metrics are tracked in the donor database system and through related spreadsheets.
· Provide narrative and analytical reports to senior leadership, the CEO, and Board as requested; provide monthly Development Department Report for the Board of Directors; Prepare regular reports on progress, budgets, receipts, and expenditures related to fundraising.
· Work with the Development and Accounting teams to ensure that information is accurately recorded in the donor database and that the database and accounting are reconciled on a regular basis.
· Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of donor database.

        Marketing, Communications and Public Relations

  • Collaborate with Development Department team members to create and implement marketing, communication, and public relations plans, including calendars.
  • Ensure that Nourish engages with local media, social media, and other communication avenues to demonstrate Nourish Pierce County’s impact on our guests in the community, so that stakeholders, donors, prospects, and potential guests are aware and informed about our impact and opportunities to obtain services or support our services.
  • Maintain or delegate responsibility to maintain, the Outlook Development Calendar to include dates and assignments for all important activities related to electronic communications, newsletters, mailings, special events, grant-related deadlines, and other related information.
  • Incorporate and support web-based programming and e-philanthropy concepts into agency Development & Communication activities.

Other Duties

  • Participates in management coverage for the agency.
  • Participate in appropriate workshops, conferences, and community meetings related to food banks and fund development. Maintain current required certifications.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings.
  • Participate in other professional development activities as assigned.

Other Duties As Assigned

Nourish Pierce County employees may be assigned tasks and duties outside of their ordinary responsibilities from time to time and are expected to comply with requests to perform other duties as assigned.

  • The ability to generate reports from donor databases, to create and manipulate spreadsheets, create pivot tables, charts, and graphs, and prepare analytic reports.
  • Must be able to provide accurate and timely written or verbal information when requested by phone, over email, or as part of regular reporting requirements.

      Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Some weekend and evening work may be required.

  • Must be able to bend, stoop, sit and lift overhead.
  • Must be able to communicate detailed information clearly in person, in writing, by phone, and by email in the English language.

      Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience

  • 3 to 5 years’ experience leading a development department at a director level.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, and evaluating employees.
  • Experience with demonstrated expertise in strategic thinking and development program planning.
  • Proven track record of successful gift solicitations and achieving revenue goals.
  • Proven track record developing and cultivating donors and relationships with multiple community stakeholders.
  • Experience and comfort working with senior level executives and board of directors.
  • Ability to successfully pass a Washington State Patrol Background Check
  • Current food handler’s permit or within 2 weeks of hire.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
  • CFRE designation preferred.
